What they did teach you in school

Questioning Education? [1]

Recently i have been thinking a lot about education and how it has shaped people’s well everything. I watched a video recently that debated the reasons why a person should or should not go to university, college or further education. A lot of the points that were said in this particular video where extremely important and useful.

Link to the video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rwqD4V4c-qo) Please watch this. He has a lot of great points to say. P.s comment and join the debate.

They made me begin to question why are students either reluctant to go on to further education or drop out or why the education system is so bad. I could aim at tons of things here but i will just focus on why students aren’t going to university.

I have been watching a lot of these videos for a period of time now and it is mainly because i am currently confused about a career path. From a young age we are asked what do you want to be in the future and sure we answered and so did i but now i have reached this point where i truly do not even know.

My question to education is: why are students dropping out or not going on to further education?

  • There are the obvious answers like: It costs £9,000 for a single year of education at university level in the UK, and in USA it costs around $36,564. Read more at (http://www.topuniversities.com/student-info/student-finance/how-much-does-it-cost-study-us)
  • Their career does not require the individual to have a degree. This perfectly normal, because there are various jobs out there that do not require the person apply to have a degree of any sort. The job may require other things for instance, experience, speaking another language or 3, analytical skills, leadership and social skills the list is endless.
  • The course that is offered at university can be shortened, therefore they found a course online or at an institution that has compressed 4-5 years to 2 years. Let’s be honest there are some university courses that i have searched and checked in detail most of the information that they spend on you is quite useless.
  • The individual is scared, depressed or confused about going of to further their education. This is one of the most common things that i have heard of personally. When talk to some of my friends they are just simply scared so they do even choose to go at all.

What education to me in is a clusterfuck of things that i have heard from friends and family and people in education. Education is not always about sitting in a room and writing down notes as a teacher walks from one end telling students information.

I gather that there are different types of learners.

Four  types of learners: visual, auditory, reading/writing, and kinesthetic. Each learner type responds to a different method of teaching. But not every student will be motivated that way, they won’t be interested in what they teacher has to say.

There is a Youtube channel that has made me value the lessons i had to teach myself and wonder at the ones that were taught to me.

The school of life, this channel (not quite sure if it is a company maybe it is research is needed) does as it says, it teaches the one thing that no school (that i have heard of anyway) will teach.

The school of life has a much more ‘yeah why aren’t they teaching those things at school’ kind of thought. They teach, careers: what career should you go into, what careers are out there, relationships:dating, marriage, Income/wealth: what is money, what is for, how can i manage it how to save it for future days?Mental health: what is it, what is anxiety, depression, how to help?Health: illness, nutrition aging and death.

They educate in a very philosophical way, they allow a person to think freely and come with your own ideas and how they can help. These are more or less the things that they never taught you in school.

Why don’t they teach how to pay for our taxes(I don’t even know and i’m almost 19),Why don’t they teach first aid, why don’t they teach us about how to vote, who is a good candidate to choose from, what are their policies, Are they good or bad, why do they teach us about relationships, why don’t they teach us about careers, why do they teach about money? I could write a list of questions, seriously i could but i am more pissed that we are being taught this thins while we are in the time frame of 6- whenever education is complete.

The last two videos that i want to share are ted talks. I know everyone and their drug dealer has watched or is watching these videos.

Please watch thsese: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iG9CE55wbtY

In this videos Sir Ken Robinson explains why learning is important and how education is .I can’t explain how such a mind connection his words are to me.

School subjects most important to least.

  1. Maths
  2. Science
  3. English
  4. History
  5. Geography
  6. Modern foreign languages
  7. Computing
  8. Art
  9. Music
  10. Drama

Education is important, it should not be forced in any way, shape or form. It should be free and we should have the choice whether or not we want to be educated. Creativity is just as important as the rest of the subjects taught. We do not need to squash creativity, we need to embrace it whether you are an artist, scientist or a CEO.

Question with me?

Hi reader so yeah this was long but it is an important subject to talk about. How important is education to you, did you go to uni, drop out, why? Is it important to go to uni, do you think having a degree will better my chances at a job?Are we all sheep for following?

Bye and enjoy.
